Book Review: Catacomb by: Madeleine Roux

This is the third of a trilogy, if you want to check out the first it is called Asylum. This trilogy is perfect to read for this month.

Synopsis: Goodreads

Sometimes the past is better off buried.

Senior year is finally over. After all they’ve been through, Dan, Abby, and Jordan are excited to take one last road trip together, and they’re just not going to think about what will happen when the summer ends. But on their way to visit Jordan’s uncle in New Orleans, the three friends notice that they are apparently being followed.. And Dan starts receiving phone messages from someone he didn’t expect to hear from again—someone who died last Halloween.

As the strange occurrences escalate, Dan is forced to accept that everything that has happened to him in the past year may not be a coincidence, but fate—a fate that ties Dan to a group called the Bone Artists, who have a sinister connection with a notorious killer from the past. Now, Dan’s only hope is that he will make it out of his senior trip alive.

Review: (4 stars)

The way Sanctum ended, I really wanted a third book. When I found out that one will be coming out, I became very excited. I wanted to know more and see where the story was going to go.

I loved Asylum and Sanctum, I didn’t like Catacomb as much as I did those. I have some problems with this one. I found this to still be creepy, but nowhere near as creepy as the others. I was a little disappointed by that. The pictures helped with the creep factor, just not the story.

The characters changed as well. I found Abby to be annoying and Jordan to be frustrating. Dan doesn’t help the situation by dragging them into more of his family’s history. Abby is all concerned about the project she is working on than her friends. They go on a road trip to help Jordan move, not go other places.

One final thing; the ending. It wasn’t much of an ending. More still could be written. It was ended on a cliffhanger; when it is the third of a trilogy. That bothers me a lot.

Besides that, I still really enjoyed this. Mysteries arise that Dan and his friends investigate. That deal with the town of New Orleans. A town that is known for its hauntings, which added to the creep factor as well and I appreciated that.

We finally learn more about his birth parents. I was fascinated by what they did and what happened to them. Dan digs up all he can about them so he can try and get to know them. Learn about his family history and why all these things keep happening to him.

Overall, Catacomb wasn’t the greatest ending for a trilogy; I want more from it. Though it had its’ issues I still found it to be quite enjoyable. I’m left with answers that I want answered. Maybe Madeleine Roux will write a novella that takes place after the ending.

    1. This is the third book in a trilogy. The first one is called Asylum. In my opinion, Asylum is the best one in the trilogy and this one is the least good. I love them all, but I think they went downhill as each book went on.
