Book Review: The Graveyard Book by: Neil Gaiman

I haven't done a book review for a while for you guys, so I have decided to post this one. I think it fits into this month.

Synopsis: Goodreads

After the grisly murder of his entire family, a toddler wanders into a graveyard where the ghosts and other supernatural residents agree to raise him as one of their own.

Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a normal boy. He would be completely normal if he didn't live in a sprawling graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor of the dead. There are dangers and adventures in the graveyard for a boy. But if Bod leaves the graveyard, then he will come under attack from the man Jack—who has already killed Bod's family . . .

Beloved master storyteller Neil Gaiman returns with a luminous new novel for the audience that embraced his New York Times bestselling modern classic Coraline. Magical, terrifying, and filled with breathtaking adventures, The Graveyard Book is sure to enthrall readers of all ages.

Review: (5 stars)

I have heard nothing but good things about Neil Gaiman. I was excited and looking forward to reading my first book by him.

A few of my friends told me how much they loved The Graveyard Book and I couldn’t wait to dig in.

As soon as I started, I was intrigued and hooked. I found the story to be fascinating.

One thing that I really loved, were the illustrations. I love to draw, but I’m not a good drawer, but I love to marvel over what other people can draw. Plus, I love books that include illustrations into the story. For me, it adds to the story.

Bod is quite the character. He grows up in a graveyard with spirits and others teaching him, protecting him and taking care of his needs. As he grows, he learns a little from his guardian about what happened to him when he was a baby. Grown, he searches for answers. These answers lead to people coming to find him. He protects his home in the process, the graveyard.

The ending, I found this sad. Bod is grown, has to leave and make his way in the world. That means leaving behind all that he has ever known.

Overall, I really enjoyed The Graveyard Book. A story that I have never read about before and I loved it. Seeing originality and outside the box is rare, but this book definitely has it. It was nice to see. I recommend this to everyone who likes different.
